Expressive Typography Bad Cree by Jessica Johns
The project goal was to create expressive typographic postcards based on the novel Bad Cree by Jessica Johns. The concept was to show the progression of the main character, Mackenzie, through grief as she experiences states of denial, reflection and acceptance. The novel uses strong imagery of hands, particularly the Kokum’s hands, which inspired the visual depictions.
In the first postcard, the hand pushing down represents Mackenzie repressing her feelings. In the middle, the hand is grasping at the rope or her lifeline. And lastly, the hands holding the type represent security, protection and wholeness.
Each postcard features a brief explanation of the place where that stage of grief occurred. The messages from her Kokum to Mackenzie are figurative reminders of the lessons she instilled in her from childhood.
